Five Things I Learned in Seminary (That You Should Know!)

I went to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota for two years. Originally I was going to be a pastor, but after working for a summer as an intern chaplain in a hospital, I wasn’t sure it was for me. I ended up graduating with a degree in the Old Testament, but the things I learned during my two and half years there have stuck with me. Here are five things in particular I picked up in Seminary that I wish more people knew.

1. The Bible repeats (and sometimes contradicts!) itself, and that’s ok!

This is a good place to start because it’s an old gem, but one only has to carefully read the very beginning of the Bible to see repeats and contradictions. In the first three chapters of Genesis, the beginning of the world is described twice, and in two totally different ways. In the first one, starting in Genesis 1:1, God creates everything day by day. There is a vast sea (a common theme in many creation stories) and God causes land to rise out of it before creating plants, animals, and eventually humans. God appears to create a large number of humans at once, rather than just two. This is debatable since we could read the line “male and female, He created them” to…
